Summer in Salcombe means the return of watersports and boats on the water. The harbour authority have been busy putting the moorings back into the water for the season and we have already seen these starting to fill back up, ready for some fun on the water.
The South Sands Ferry is busy all summer; If you have not used the South Sands Ferry before, it can be a little confusing! You get onto the sea tractor just next to the hotel on the beach (children and dogs are welcome), the tractor takes you into the water, then you swap from the tractor to the boat (this is reversed on the way home). The ferry runs every half hour between South Sands and Salcombe town centre. The perfect transportation to get to us from town!
There is nothing better than having long daylight hours, where you get the opportunity to be greeted by a beautiful sunrise and then say goodnight to a stunning sunset. When is your favourite time to walk?
Back in the Spring, the first week of April hosted the National Walking Day but of course we don’t need a special day to walk here, everyday is a walking day. Most of us prefer a walk in the sunshine, so luckily for you we have plenty of that queued up. When the sun does not shine, did you know that you get the opportunity to see different animals that only come out in the rain? Kids love the rain, crops love the rain and usually afterwards we get treated with a rainbow, so embrace the rain! Smell the wild garlic, photograph the bluebells and make some memories.
We are proud to announce a new partnership with Salcombe RNLI as our charity of choice.
South Sands Hotel Supports Salcombe RNLI
Situated alongside Salcombe’s original lifeboat station at South Sands, the South Sands Hotel is proud to continue supporting Salcombe RNLI through a new partnership. Past support has included a very successful charity dinner held in November 2018 in celebration of Salcombe Lifeboat Station’s 150th anniversary and they are now launching a longer-term working partnership.
Guests at the hotel, visitors and staff all enjoy a wide range of marine activities which, without the support of the local RNLI team, would not be as safe to undertake. The aim of this new partnership will not only be to raise money for the RNLI but will also raise awareness of key safety issues; for example, the danger of ‘cold water shock’, that many of us may not be aware of until too late.
More people are taking to the water for their holiday, swapping their usual holiday abroad for a beach, boat, and seaside holiday in our own tropical Salcombe climate. Many are trying activities for the first time, creating a pressing need for safety education and advice, all of which is readily available thanks to the local presence of Salcombe RNLI, and its constant readiness to save lives at sea.
Lifeboat Operations Manager, Andrew Arthur said, “A huge thank you goes to the South Sands Hotel for their support, which will go a very long way in helping everyone to stay safe, spread the word and ensure that we can continue our vital role”.
